It is fine to use a word seed of 12 words, it's secure enough. 12 word seeds give the security of 128 bits. 24-word seeds offer the security of 256 bits. Although Bitcoin makes use of private keys that are 256 bits in size The security of the elliptic curve is about half of the bits that are used which is 128 bits in secp256k1 is being utilized.
