WOW! Just ran across this site. What memories this brings back. My Dad was Raleigh Hartsell (passed in 2019). In addition to having a couple of tractors on the road, Dad and his brother, AD, had also started a small business washing Mercury's trailers, and doing maintenance on the owners' tractors. I was only 10 when these pictures were taken. At the time Mercury's break point was in Columbia, SC. That year they moved to Jacksonville, Fl . shortly after, old 5264 and 5265 were gone, replaced by newer H model Macks. In Jacksonville I spent many a day and night washing trailers (with a hydrochloric acid solution that we would probably be thrown in jail for using now :D ) and greasing and washing the owner-operator tractors. I remember the names Bill Mcadoo, Troy Brogdon, James Raynor and others. In it's hay day, Mercury was a great company, with great people. However, the turning point seemed to be when a guy, Bill Favel (sp???), I think was his name, took over. I remember Dad cussing his name and what he did to the company, and made a promise to myself to go piss on his grave when he died.

txgator: Glad to see those pictures of your dad and uncle. I knew Raleigh Hartsell, the owner of that truck, he was still there when I was leased to Mercury. Didn't know your Dad, but I'm sure my Dad would've known him. I remember McAdoo. Is McAdoo still living? If so,ask him if he remembers Shorty Crumpler. If you have more Mercury pictures, please post them.

Billy I didn't drive for Mercury but a friend of mine and I bought 2 used Mercury Great Dane 45 ft. dry vans back  in the early 80's. They were vented vans and we ran them for years. I eventually sold mine  to a guy in Kent, Wa. when I was living out there and my friend last I heard still had his using it for storage in Collier County, Fla. Thanks for the memories I hadn't thought about them trailers for quite some time.

All of the pictures displayed were owner operators that where friends of mine. Sadly, those guys are deceased.  The GMC # 7208 belonged to Troy Brogdon. My last truck # was 7206 a cabover Brockway. My first # 7048 was a Transtar. Mercury orginated in Mt. Olive,NC in the mid 30's,operating as Carolina Southern Motor Express in the South from NC,SC GA,FLA., going North they changed placards on the doors to Safety Transportation. In about 1954 or 55 new ownership changed name to Mercury, combining the 2 companies together to form Mercury. Headquarters moved to Tampa,Fl. For many years we had to gateway within 15 miles of Mt.Olive,NC, on every trip. Another casualty of deregulation. The last breakbulk was located on I-95, Florence,SC.

I am viewing ltmdwb pic wonder why you are not viewing it Newfie and Billy.

Bill
The picture he posted shows the problem, the photo has just started loading. It's showing the top 1/4 inch of the photo. If the rest of it didn't appear the download was interrupted.
