Hello folks. I imagine quite a few have some knowledge on this so thought I would ask. My 77 W-900A still has what I would call the "stacked spring" set up. It rides pretty rough. Even though it's a 3408, they are still listed as "12-15,000 lb rating" in the build sheets.  My question is whats involved in switching it over to tapered leaf? Also, do you have to put shocks on when you go to tapered leaf? Mine doesn't currently have front shocks.  Thanks for the help! Dave

Dave, sounds like not much, according to Wayne.. and imagine shocks would help..

If you still work the truck you could leave the stack in it and add shocks that will help quit a bit.

Dave, I changed mine and have done several in the past. You can use the same U bolts and every thing else. For shocks you will have to find brackets from an A model donor or use something else as the originals are no longer available. There was a KW dealer in NC that had one nos and he wanted 800 plus for it. thought he really had a prize. I used the bottom shock mounts from a Ford aero max and a set of top brackets from a 900A. the top would be easy to make and I think ones from late model KW would probably work. I looked at the shock set-up on a volvo and I am sure it would adapt. The ride is unbelievably better with the tapered springs and they go right in. Wayne

Thanks guys. Wayne did you get the springs through Kenworth or a spring shop? I hear there's a spring shop over at Springfield but don't know the name of it.

agree with wayne also on that issue ...

Dave, I bought them through KW dealer. We no longer have a spring shop here. There is one in Decatur(decatur spring) and one in Peoria don't remember the name. I guess champion spring is still in St Louis on Choteaux St. I don't find much savings so I just go oem on Pete and KW. Wayne
