John, correct me if I am wrong but didn't the truck stop at Houlton have Bear on the menu about 40 or so years ago. I think I remember that but could be old-timers setting in. I used to take meat to caribou and Ft Kent in late 60's and come back to Mars Hill and get spuds for Tweedie. Wayne

Here are a few things on the big cab COEs. The introduction piece is particularly interesting...only the very first 108" bunks were upholstered like this with the square pleats and that shelf/curtain arrangement. I was told you could originally have just about any upholstery you wanted but they were quickly overwhelmed and came up with the VIT package of colors an choices.

Cheers,

David

Terry,

The hood is worth saving, even if it has cracks, since its cut for the canadian dual hose air cleaner.Does it have dual air cleaners ?.That style of air cleaner top has been out of stock for a few years now, somebody somewhere needs one ( or two).A model 36 inchers are getting hard to find too, too many people scrapping them thinking that nobody wants a little bunk.John

Kid, just what I need another truck, but it sure is tempting. Didn't you say something awhile back about buying your own Christmas gift? Thanks for the heads up, I'm sure it won't last long. Now that I think about it your A model needs a friend to share the driveway with, go for it.

Hopefully this will help motivate some folks to get out and work on their trucks..  Or if it is too cold to watch Youtube video's.  Today was pretty nice - a bit overcast but no rain and not all that cold so I fired up the camera and truck while the wife was away and got busy.

Hi,

John you've got some nice looking trucks there and Hanks the Klos trucks are well known in Victoria. They build some beautys to ,"The Joker" one of them. That 56' will look great cruising down the Hume Hwy.

Here's a pic I snapped not more than an hour ago in Sydney, Australia of late model Cabover KW K108, had a triple axle arrangement not seen ofter on the East Coast of Oz.

Some cool purple KW's there,

What a shame to see that bullnose like that, I'm starting to like the looks of these early cabovers.

Tell me Grenfell, the S2 and the cabovers of the same time did they share the same grille assemblies? They look the same width.

Here's a 66 cabover recently for sale (on the net) in Oz.

i own a 1951

1961

1974 [s2]

all narrow nose

all different widths

pictured is my s2 and a 69 w900 the w900 is 2in wider than the s2

never mesured a s model but im sure there narrower again than my s 2

confusing??? yep

Aw heck, may as well throw a big ol A model Michigan train in for good measure. Lots of wheels are always cool.
By grenfell34 - Thursday, January 05, 2012 2:07 PM
kid im sorry i misunderstood your question!. the big twin headlights started  about 1980 with kw,s here  just better visability i guess as most long haul trucks here run  bull lights [spotlights]  the bars are known as bullbars , they started in the top end of oz were there were  unfenced cattle stations[ranches] for hundreds of miles and it was common to hit a stear or bull at night. feral water buffalo were a big problem in the 70,s also but are almost all gone now  thank god cos they hit HARD and roos are still a problem on the western plains. a guy from a national insurance co told me they average a couple of hundred calls a day from cars hiting roos in oz???

I love those slant nose KW's, what model is that?

And check out those Garrett drives in their pressed slacks, patent leather shoes, and crisp shirts! I don't mind not having to wear a tie to work anymore but the whole world has gone too casual these days for my taste. Or maybe I'm just showing my age...

1976 VIT 200 that was owned by Hutchinson Fruit Company in Albuquerque NM. Used to see this truck when I was a kid on the roads in Northern New Mexico. Only VIT 200 I have seen with a single air cleaner. No idea what was under the hood. Never had a chance to check out this rig up close unlike some of there other trucks. Found this picture on a web site that was about influential Albuquerque families. The kid on the truck was one of the Hutchinson grand kids.

By deguitars - Wednesday, March 30, 2011 1:45 PM
That's a nice one Tony! Ya know, I've saidit before and I'll say it again...you can buy an awful lot of truck for this kind of money and get right in and go have fun. What more could you ask for with an ext. hood and a Cat underneath of it? Money for fuel I guess but hey nothing is perfect!

Everyone knows I'm partial to cab overs but my all time favorite W900 was one I saw featured back in 1978 in Fortune Magazine. It was an ext. hood owned by a guy named Ed DeVito. The truck was later featured in a few different magazines but even though Ed sold it I hear it's still on the road, painted black now?

Here's a few shots...

Usually I avoid anything the least bit political in nature, including all the hub hub around here lately. But seriously, no copy-writed materials allowed includes forty year old brochures??? Just exactly what are the lawyers worried about?

I hate to say it but I might have had enough of the new ATHS. This is supposed to be fun and helpful and if I can't even share the materials I have then what's the point hanging out here.

Cheers,

Jim,
Now that I see this photo it's unclear whether it's a K100 or a 500 series. It's has the opening driver side front panel of a 500, but lacks the wrap around cab skirts of that series. The grill is K100, probably added later, and the steel dash means no later than '68 no matter what it is. I'm not up on Canadian specs though so maybe that explains it, or it's cobbled together from different trucks? I suspect it started life as a 500 though and not a K100.

Still a cool ride!

Thanks,
David

the 500 is a conventional not a coe but you may be thinking of the K123, or K125 both are coe's

John I have a very similar experience - I think this was also taken in 1976 and I haven't been right ever since either. I was 5, my brother was 1. Mom's taking the picture. Went to Seattle and brought new truck home to Illinois.

Here are a few of a very early K100 big bunk. Note the very rare seat headrests that are simply bolted to the standard low back seats...these gave way to the one-piece high back seats very quickly.

Cheers,
David

John,
That's okay about the underhood/interior shots...we like to see 'em anyway! I still think she looks great, and I get a kick out of seeing your W900 restoration sitting in the same driveway as the K100s your Dad had new. I look at those photos often.

Yes, you heard correctly about the engine swap. We found out the Detroit needs rings so I decided if I had to dump money into something I'd rather it be a Cummins anyway, so I'm having Tony Martin overhaul a BC1 for me and send all the associated parts to make the swap.

Here's my Wednesday contribution for this week:

Not sure where this came from but it looks like a happy owner looking over his new truck...

I was just about to post a pic of Ken's truck, man that is a nice truck! It showed up unannounced to my show last year (and hopefully this year) in Cache Creek. Ken took me for a ride in it, cruises along as smooth as could be (has Volvo air ride on all axles);I think he had to put the straight pipes on it to remind you that it was a car and not a caddy!

Jim, great pair of early K100s! Can you tell me more, are they Canadian spec? I've not seen the spacing on the blue truck's clearance lamps before, maybe not original? Love those period paint schemes!

...mid 70's, think they were donors for the restored #18...Jim.;)

If they're any good I wouldn't mind having the grill bars, outside spotlight brackets, the indicator lights that go above the switches and wiper knobs and the red warning, green turn signal, and blue high beam light lenses if the writing isn't worn off or broken. On the indicator lights above the switches, even if they don't light up if the labels on them are good I'm interested. They can be taken apart and put on 1 that does light up.

Looks like a natural for a remake or sequel to 'Duel'! All it needs is an older fuel tanker with large "FLAMMABLE" letting on it to pull!

64-66. Maybe an early 67. Most 67s had the new style fiberglass roof cap where the spot light handle or shaft was level and had the little molded humps where the horns mount. like this......

Hi All:

Does anyone know the origin of this photo?

http://forums.aths.org/InstantForum2010/Attachment22808.aspx

It's listed in the links on page 3 of this thread. I built this truck in the early 80's and ran it for about 5 years. Just wondering what ever happened to it, kinda lost track of it. One of those you wished you had back...

Thanks,

Marty

I wonder if this cab even tilts now? That's alot of weight there, wonder if the cab structure is beefed up? If it doesn't tilt how is the engine accessed?

no doubt! k100's have weak fiberglass dog houses to start with witch is where the structural stringht in a cab is.....plus at full tilt youd need a shop roof what 25 foot high...hope the hydrolic's was beefed up too!!

The maiden voyage went well (as reported in my blog).  Putting it away for the night did not.  My starter will spin but will not engage the ring gear.  It is a new style corperate Paccar starter.  I could be missing a starter relay or something but then why would it work so good up to this point.  At any rate I got it put away mostly with gravity and small push from my pickup and a large piece of wood to get it over the lip of cement going into the garage.  It runs great, pulls with much more authority then the 270 did, and the 5 speed can be run by itself if need be and my lackluster 2 stick skills fail me.  I am no longer wanting for power.  Feels as strong as the 400 in my 81' did.  :) - yes the grill is going to go back on.  I have some new hardware on order and I am going to clean it up and maybe paint it to get me by for a while.

Wayne, HQ created a seperate section on the forum home page with the new rules, http://forums.aths.org/156857/Forum-Rules In this case it was as I stated in the message "no copyrighted material".

I got a question. Deleted, ILLEGAL, copyrighted materials one of the proud members has posted were right on the spot - these were exact answers to my question: "Brute Or Not". Thanks to detailed Mexican dimensions those who had a chance to see the post could figure it out . Now, are we allowed to further discuss those findings when we learned, they were obtain by illegal action or our deliberations will be deleted as well ?

edit
What is the problem with using s.e.t.b.a.c.k.word on trucking forum ? It is being automaticly replaced with "Mexican" - without my knowledge nor consent. That above is not what I have said - we are not talking Mexican, we are talking Alaskan

Eddy's pic on the last page of the IML Kenworth - in the 10 years or more my Dad worked for IML, I roamed the yards on many a weekend and I don't think any KW's were left by the early 70's.  IML mostly ran White Freightliners for long haul and had a mixture of different straight trucks for delivery.  There might have been a random Mack or some other brand but I only remember seeing those on rare occasion.  My Dad was the Phoenix Terminal Manager from around 76-79'.  Worked in Portland, OR before that going back to 69 or 70 roughly and was at Freightliner before that.  The Silver Eagle Kenworth that was donated to the Museum at Brooks OR was commonly stored in Portland in the early 80's when my Dad was with Silver Eagle.

With it being Kenworth Wednesday, and I missed it, I found out that Kenworth made their first cabover in 1936, and it was bubble-nosed cabover.  Just like Gene Blackmore's Freightliner.  And at one time during the 1950s, they made a flat-hooded truck to where the top of the hood was flat like a Pete.  I would love to see the inside of the 1936 Kenworth.

Looking good Kevin, looks like your Stang is about to get ran over but I know you didn't. When I first built the N series I made a few trips around the neighborhood, and then started venturing out further and further away from home. First thirteen miles over to the next town and back, and them Austin to a car show and back, and eventually to Houston and back. One nearly every trip I would have some kind of problem. Nothing big enough to have to have me towed home but little nit picking stuff. Finally I got all the bugs out and it had served me well.

Michelle, good eye! '67 sounds right, the only thing throwing me off is the hinged panel under the driver's side...but maybe that's not what I'm seeing, or it's a Canadian spec thing like I mentioned?

Looks good Hank.  The interior is a nice mix of simple plush, I like it better without that visor, and I agree, a narrower bumper will make it look more nimble.  Just my opinions, of course, I don't go with popular fashion.

Does this KW have a 5 and 4?

Took these from the LCM site (all due credit given) but found them so stunning I had to post them here for everyone.

I'm just completely mesmerized by these shots...the trucks are so squeaky new they almost look fake! It's also amazing to see one dealer's method of getting them down from the piggyback configuration. I noticed the tow tractor is minus its 5th wheel too. Does anyone have a good shot of the actual mount that went on the frame, I'm assuming it was a pivoting type?

Things I also noticed were the Cummins being painted Tan not white (on the rig in the lift) and how it's already got undercoating on the floors.

The tow tractor just looks so perfect to me for some reason. Maybe it's just the proportions of the 20" or 22" wheels or even the angle of the shot but whatever it is I'm in love! It actually has the exact same wheelbase & fuel tank configuration as my own truck so maybe that's it?  Just love the paint job too, and the little curly exhaust pipe.

Sure would love to see more shots like these if anybody has 'em!

Happy KW Wednesday...

David

Pampered Coach does find some beauties from time to time.  Rod Sieger (works there, brother Randy owns Pampered Coach) has a knack for finding these good looking trucks, a couple of MH Macks, a Freightliner COE and a couple KW K100's in the last 4 or so years.  If anyone runs across one in the Ft Wayne area, let me know and I will do my best to look it over and get some pic's.

John, it sure looks great! I know you've been working on this one a long time and put in a lot of hard work and hours and it's paid off. Please share more photos of the interior and under hood and show off your work!

Next up will you be doing a K100 in honor of the trucks like your Dad bought new?

Kid may have the stack mount I need.  I will post a picture.  I don't know if the old small cab shared the same mount as the A model or other models.  I will be looking for a part number to see if it crosses to anything.  Maybe I will have to get one fabbed.  I don't anticipate dual stacking until I get the truck painted.  Would be nice to have the mount on when its painted though.

Here's two with 6v92s

Actually the orange one, owned by Dan Sheafer(New springfield, Oh), is a repower.  Was a 318 truck apparently and got repowered sometime in it's life.  I found it on truckpaper last summer, dreamt hard about looking at it(only hr away), but Dan got ahold of it first.  He's gone throught it mechanically and repainted it.  I saw it at the Piston Power show last fall.  I still want it LOL!!

I agree that it would be cool to see one of these get restored though. Does anyone know much about the PIE cabovers and how they were spec'd? They seem pretty bare bones, I don't think I've ever seen one with a sun visor.

Nice shots!

Jim, great pair of early K100s! Can you tell me more, are they Canadian spec? I've not seen the spacing on the blue truck's clearance lamps before, maybe not original? Love those period paint schemes!

Here's one I just pulled off the net the other day. Brand new K100 from around '78 or so. Still has flush mounted fuel tank filer necks...might have been an option for the later years?

I bought a new KW in late '76 with a crawl thru 36, my pardner bought 2 late the next year that were 36's with the big opening, called them sit-ins. Under the bunks was a compartment for shoes and other stuff. Could not be accessed from the side doors. Not sure if they were '78 or '77 models. Bryan

Bryan,

Last A model I ran...was built later in 77 ( titled a '78 ) had the 36" crawl thru. All the next ones we got... starting in the Spring of '78 were 36" sit ins

Nice shots Hank!

I was looking at this one recently from a 1967 KW brochure. I would love to find a trailer like this some day. On the tractor notice the 1st generation air ride. I also couldn't help notice how distorted the side skin is behind the luggage door. It's not so much the rivets as the braces behind not being aligned which is what I'm trying so hard to avoid as I reassemble mine. Fabulous looking early K100 anyway...

Cheers,
David

Sorry for the terrible pictures.  I learned yesterday that later this year this '79 is going to get cut.  Owner bought the truck for the wrecker bed and intends on keeping the bed, engine & transmission and scraping the remainder. Short hood, small bunk, average condition, at best, for a '79.

John, thanks for posting those of the K100! I remember finding out about it after it was sold or else I would have been very interested in buying it. I wonder where it went? If I remember correctly it sold for something like $14k at the time but you just don't find too many like this with so few miles. Pampered Coach has had a few really nice ones over the years.

Cheers,
David

That purple bullnose KW looks like the one that used to bring watermelons to Ripley Fruit Market in Alpena Mi. several years ago. The O/O's name was David Taunton out of Louisiana somewhere. Maybe someone on the board here knows of him.

John, yes the Brute's all seem to have the axle set back pretty far, it's just hard to see that but so clearly in the 3/4 photos on the spec sheets. The standard front axle is also rated at 20,000 lbs. as opposed to 12,500 lbs. on the C-500. These were also models that could be heavily customized from the factory depending on a specific application...i.e. twin steer axles and whatnot.

Krooser,

You keep getting pic's of my buddies trucks. Reichert & Knepp out of Bourbon & Warsaw, IN.  When it was just Reichert, Liberty & I sent business each other's way.  By the time he hooked up with Andy Knepp, I had closed my own business and was running wrecker for the Mack/Volvo dealership.

T.

Liberty seems to be a stand-up guy... only charged me $150.00 to tow the truck to TTP... i broke right in front of their shop but had no power to the wheels.

Exactly one week later the used power divider i had TTP install also broke in Covington, IN. I limped it 100 miles north then called Liberty again.

Here's an old PIE KW shorty cab I've had sitting around on my internet photos file. I remember reading a article once where the operations manager of PIE explained how KWs saved them nickels and dimes here and there in maintenance and repairs which really added up with a fleet as big as theirs was at that time. Unfortunately, in its present sate this particular truck can only promise to separate you from a bunch of nickels and dimes...

Looks like this one has a 318 Detroit. I'm curious about the fuel tank, I've never seen this style of round filler neck base on a KW...in this period at least.

Cheers,
David

If you know about the 007 w900L that is in Australia you probably now the Klos Bros. This beatiful 1956 belongs to them. We are working on a deal to load this in a container to head to Australia soon.

Here's one I pulled off the net of a shiny new K100C. It looks like a very late '83, probably just before the change over to E models. It features certain E model details such as the black molded cab skirts, tank straps w/steps, and of course the later style grab rails. Nifty paint job too.

Cheers,
David

I think Tom Mullen's KW belongs in this thread. These were taken at West Springfield. This was an eight year project and he just made it to the show. Some of the paint had not been cured enough to be buffed yet. It is a beauty with a double frame and 3 sticks.

Wayne

Wayne,

That would have been before my time.I have a hard time just remembering what the name of some of the old stops were before the Irving's fuel chain bought most of them up, lol.John

Everything seems OK. The 'ol 335 sure sounds good...and the 4x4 is a nice shifting transmission.

My side-kick ("Diesel") had to pose with it.

John W., so you saw that one for sale again recently? I'm not savvy enough to search Craig's List all over so I didn't catch it. The photos John Costley posted are from when it was for sale a few years ago. I'd sure be interested in hearing if you happen to run across it. Even though I have my hands plenty full at the moment it's not out of the question that I'd do something stupid like buying it.

Thanks for all the compilments.

Dave...

There's a reason for hoods and doors.....hide whats inside ! LOL

Seriusly though....you'll be disappointed. It's NOT the kind of beautiful, detailed restoration that you and Tom M. and others are doing. It's just a big fun toy to keep my Dad and I in touch with the GREAT years of our trucking past. It's got amateur paint and only what we can justify in $$$$ and time.......but just right for us

I'll get some photos for you when I get a chance and get things tidied up a bit

Dad had three new KWs...70 and 75 cabovers and an 81 conv. ( He didn't own those trucks....He drove for a small private fleet that I'm still at after 38 years ). I'd love to have one of those old KWs....but , if I was to try a coe...I'd prefer a 65-67....before all the plastic. Very doubtful that will ever happen......my "golden years" plans have been altered slightly.

Did I see in another thread......your replacing that 350 DD for a Cummins ? If so " thumbs up ". Dad's 75 had a 8v71T. Ran good...but would of broke an O/O.

Okay lets see if we keep this one alive. My brothers and I have been working hard at getting our 1961 KW rat rod going again. In October of last year we were on our way to a truck show and our engine dropped a cylinder head valve. I was driving it and shut off quickly which saved a lot of parts from further damage. We took it apart fixed and polished many parts on the engine. Also did a few other things like added two roof clearance lights and redid the interior.

From NZ

"CONCORDE" back in its old colour when new.  This was the 1st of 2 V12 Detroit Kenworths imported in for Mike Lambert on logs in the centrel North Island.  This was the fastest truck in NZ at the time, it had 100hp more than the next highest hp truck, and still holds the quickest lap record by a working truck at Baypark Raceway.  This truck would pass cars loaded going up the Kaimais, and it got its name "Concorde" from a loader driver who couldnt believe its return trip times.  Mike Lambert received many complaints from the public because of its speeding driver

This was for sale when I bought my 81'. The owner really thought I should have it but at the time it was beyond my capability to deal with it. Original extended hood V12 truck set up for heavy haul lowboy service. It may very well still be there but I have no way of knowing. VonArx Drayage in Windsor/Healdsburg, CA. I took this in 2007. He had all sorts of fairly involved projects in there but there were some fairly rare pieces these days. A couple large cab K100 Aerodynes that were originally 3408 trucks. All the parts where there to make more then 1 good one including engines.

I now have a bumper but it isn't going to be a simple bolt on.  It sits a touch too high and not far enough back to allow the hood to open.  Not sure how I will resolve this yet and based on what I expect from work I won't be messing with it until May more then likely.  I am pretty sure the mounts are not correct for the truck..heck the whole front end is wrong but I am trying to make it play the part of wide hood.  I wouldn't mind finding a wide radiator someday to match up with it.  I also stripped a fuel tank that was given to me, sanded and started to polish it.  I haven't had luck so far finding the shroud and step for my passenger side so a tank is going back on there with some steps for the time being and may just stay that way.  I believe I fly out for work on Monday so KW time is over for me for a while.

John I never saw a B with a crawl thru to the sleeper. Even if it was still possible to order I can't imagine why anyone would. Drivers sure would have avoided it after the big opening became available. I think I agree was a day cab and someone added bunk. But then I learn something new every day. Wayne

Wayne, I agree 100%.....who in their right mind would want to go back to crawling thru that hole ?? !! maybe some cheap fleet ? or maybe KW made them available so you could put one on a day cab with out cutting up the back of the cab ? don't have a clue....just thinking out loud

I wonder why the U.S built (1973 - 1976) cabovers of the time had twin grab rails and full steps, where as the Oz built ones only had one grab rail. My cab is a 73' (76 built truck) and only has the one.

I got an IM on this one so heres a little clarification on the scale of these trucks.

These trucks ran on a private dirt highway system that runs thru the NW Maine paper woods called the Golden Road. You could buy a pass to go in and go camping, but billboards at the gates warned you to pull over if you saw a truck approaching and that since it was private property you were liable for youre own damages, as well as any damage to the trucks in the event of an accident.

The trailers are 10' wide at the axles and were built at the shop up there in the woods from steel and components that were trucked in.The bunks on the trailers are outrigged, 12' wide ( look at the end trailer in the pic ) and 14' tall. There aint no powerlines or low overpasses on the Golden Road, lol.Trailers are 50' long.Tires are 12x24, same as crane tires pretty much.No dollies, the first two trailers had the frame rails extended out the back with a 70 ton Holland double lock mounted at the rear.Probably turned a little mean, but they didnt need to go downtown, lol.

The tractors were more like a piece of high speed heavy equipment than a truck.10' wide 70 ton planetary drives on steel rocker beams, no springs. All wheel drive, can remember the front axle rating ( 30k? ) but it was the widest rockwell driven steer availible.Gave the trucks an odd look because it wasnt a full 10' wide like the drives.Transfer case was Rockwell also.Im pretty sure the tractor in this picture is the first one.If so the engine is a KTA600 and the transmission is a Clark Powershift. At 5'8'' tall, the bottom of the air cleaner was just about at fourhead height to me and I could sqaut down and duckwalk under the front bumper without hitting my head.Didnt need a creeper on these trucks, just a roll around stool, lol.

The gross weight on these combos was usually upwards of 350K.

never understood wobble wheels, why anyone other than Swishy would want em.. swish probably started the craze over in Isreal knowin him...

and sure dont see many shovel nose KWs around, what years were they Henry?

I need to learn to do that, The truck was on a farm in Missouri, I bid on it several years ago, out bud by 10 dollars. truck went to kansas and sat for 5 years. The farm raised corn silage for live stock. Truck was full of shuckings I guess from loading the trailer in the field. Its pretty dirty but very original. has 534.934 original miles. even has the old Kansas city mud flaps on it. Truck was built in Canada, The 5th wheel releases from the right side. Lots of electrical problems, Cab needs to be stripped, primed and painted, and a little chrome would help, not alot. I need to sell the steel wheels off the rear and run Tubeless Aluminum. and its air ride 13 speed. Nice truck. A fellow Trucker Sunny

John, great shot! Looks like your driving a W900? What is your Dad running...doesn't look like one of his K100s?

Cheers,
David[/quote]

Yea, It was my last KW before I got this thing I'm driving now. Was in Petes for 26 years.

'77 KW the day I got my first Pete...between Christmas and New Years 1984

My Dad's last KW....an '81....the one in the mirror

Note the licence plate location. We had our plates mounted on the swing plate under the bumper.........until this local chicken sh#*&!t interstate cop found a technicality in the rule book and started busting us . IIRC...they had to be 12" off the ground and we were a tad lower.

I ran an '86 with a crawl through. Like was said, the sit down opening was an option, eventhough almost all of them came with it..this guy wanted to be able to pull the bunk and haul logs whithout that big hole in the back.

Tony and John, didn't Dick Curless say something about "that stretch of Maine that;s never seen a smile and the Hainsville woods, and a thombstone every mile", or something like that. :)

Bill

Bill,

Open youre Rand McNally to the Maine page.Find Rt2A coming south out of Houlton (top end of Interstate 95 ) running down to Macwahoc, just north of Mattawamkeag. That streatch of road is the one from the song and it was the only way down from Aroostock county ( potato country ) before the interstate was built. The road runs thru tall pine forest, not much sunlight to melt her off during the winter.
http://www.virtualtruckroute.com/music_lyrics_atombstoneeverymile.html

The Golden road starts just outside Millinocket ( at Rt.11 ) and runs NW up to the quebec border.Lots and lots of dirt roads up in that NW corner. Some big, some little. Some old cut, some new cut. Some go thru to other roads, some just dead end at old log landings, gravel pits, or ponds.Real easy to get lost up in there if you dont pay attention.A copy of "The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer " from DeLorme is a handy thing to have if you ever head up that way.John

This isn't my truck, just hoping that some good parts don't get scraped.

Jim H. Thanks so much for posting Davids KW Pics. I remember that truck being at the fruit market in Alpena, Mi. throughout the years. I looked closely at all the pics and I'm sure that is the truck in the salvage yard pic. Such a shame to see a neat old truck go that route. Wonder whatever happened to David, dont know how old he would be now. Would sure like to know.

Just talked to David Taunton in Crowley, Louisiana. He is 76 years old now and retired. The purple KW in the salvage yard pic is infact his old 55 model bullnose It is located in Danny Lambeth's salvage yard in Wellsville, Kansas. David sold 3 bullnose KW's and 1 LT Mack to Danny all at one time. R.I.P. Purple KW.

Not to high jack the thread. Ricky hit it right on the nail. Any 1949 an older has to be a steel cab with NO wind wing windows. We went to take a look at a 1948 KW puzzle once (it was in pieces). And this is what the bare cab looked like.

The one and only new truck I ever had the honors of driving and I took the check to the dealers and picked it up myself for the comapnay I was driving for aty the time, its a 1999 T800 with a 3406E 475hp with a 18 spd, I only got to spend 6 months in the truck before my heart condition took me out of it, I have no idea where its at now anymore but sure do miss it.

Hello everyone-

My dad and I spend most of our time as lurkers, and get a big kick out of all the topics and posts. :)  I figured Kenworth Wednesday would be a good excuse to stop being a lurker, and post a picture of one of our trucks.

This is our 1973 50th anniversary W900, with 1970 Page & Page Log Gear.  Originally it was powered with a 335, but has since been repowered with a good running Big Cam III 400 (love that turbo whistle).  It's a twin stick with 6 x 4 transmissions, and 3 pad walking beam with 5.29 SSHD's.  Nice long 250" wheelbase with an overall length of 32 feet.  She's a good runner, but needs to be cleaned up a bit, so we are planning to repaint, replumb, rebuild.  Aside from driving her around, the coolest part is that I have had great conversations with the original owner, who has passed on service records, build records, and a bunch of neat old photos of the truck when it was working.

My dad and I really like the old log trucks....his is a 1962 351A Pete, with 1958 Page & Page log gear powered by a NT-280 cummins.....we'll save that one for the Pete forum....

Also, when I get some pictures of our 1948 Kenworth (CD-524), I will post those as well... Our '48 pretty much matches the build record....double steel frame, timken worms, 10.00x20 wheels, 4x3 transmissions, NHBS 275 cummins. It's a bare frame truck, but we think it was a dump truck in it's original use because it has a relatively short wheelbase (208"), and the rear crossmember is in front of the back of the rear drivers.

Anyway, great to be a part of such a awesome group of folks!

-Mike

Dual air cleaners.  They are on exactly the same place on the truck but for whatever reason in this picture the passenger side one doesn't look right.  I think it is just the top cover isn't down quite right.  I updated my blog.  it is going to venture out tomorrow.  Hopefully it isn't pouring rain.  Look to get some local miles, get the temps up, look for leaks, see how it performs etc.

Until now.....I assumed any KW after around '77-'78 had the big opening as standard. All of ours did, including two '84 Bs with 36" sleepers.

I just dug through my junk and was surprised when I found that... apparently the big opening was an option on the small bunks ??

The "B" spec brochure shows a 32" and a 36" sleeper and also a 32 and 36 with big opening....also the B I speced...lists the opening size for the 36" . Can't remember the details....but I doubt they would list opening size if it wasn't necessary ??

Anyone ever saw a "B" with a factory crawl through ? Got to be a little rare

By Aaron - Sunday, August 14, 2011 5:45 AM
The same handle from the 40's to 70, but sometimes there tough to find, KW doesn't have them any more unless a dealewr has old stock, but if it was listed on a computer another dealer can snatch it up, the door locks might be able to be had from KW I haven't check in a few years.
I've got a bunch of stuff to take to the pattern maker and get made, and I've got those on the list to make if the price isn't to bad, Hanson has been on my but to get them looked at as he needs a set.

Hank:

To the best of my knowledge yes, dual air cleaners from the factory, wet Donaldson. No toolbox under right step factory but I fabricated one and hinged part of the fairing. Worked good for straps and ratchets. Factory power was Super 280? if I recall correctly. We put a 335 in it then BCI 400. 13 spd and Hendrickson RT on later model rears. It originally came from Best Way Paving in Greeley, CO.

Have fun,

Hank,

Sorry to hear you had engine problems on the KW.She is looking good but the smaller pipes would probably suite her better. As far as a bumper, keep youre eyes open for some thick aluminum channel and you can go with the old style, but with whatever you want for holes.Im not a big fan of gullwing bumpers, I like bumpers that are sqaure ended, but sometimes a big bumper is too much.Just my opinion.John

I wonder if this cab even tilts now? That's alot of weight there, wonder if the cab structure is beefed up? If it doesn't tilt how is the engine accessed?
By Kid - Thursday, January 05, 2012 5:14 PM
Kevin, yep R side looks uptilted toward hood/front. Lack of L stack doesnt help... If'n u have 2 air cleaners.... u have to have 2 stacks.... its a law.
Good luck on the shakedown cruise, hope the chase car is goin too, cause if it dont, thats when sh...stuff happens..
By John Woge - Saturday, April 14, 2012 1:49 AM
In the States...the handle like yours was available as an option and they referred to it as the " "J" step full length grab handle"

The two handles were also an option and was referred to as the " ladder type cab access package"

The above were available on just the drivers side or both sides.....at least on early ones

Not 100% sure.....but I'm thinking the ladder style was standard equipment on the 108" VIT

This was through mid '70s....not sure about after that

John I never saw a B with a crawl thru to the sleeper. Even if it was still possible to order I can't imagine why anyone would. Drivers sure would have avoided it after the big opening became available. I think I agree was a day cab and someone added bunk. But then I learn something new every day. Wayne

I don't have the means to roll steel.  I posted pictures of the existing mount in my blog.  I update my blog just about everytime I accomplish a task on the truck.  Hoping to find a match for that mount.  Or a sturdy pair that match that I can install when I go to duals.

David,

I think your correct on the hinged panel being a Canadian thing. I think Canadian cab overs used it a little longer than ours. There was a period of time in 60s, that there was quite a bit of difference in the looks of the two. Some time in the early 70s ( maybe very late 60s) they appeared to be similar.

I'm home till the first of the year......maybe I'll try and dig some photos and scan them.

What about the location of the spot light on the tractor you posted ????  Only one I ever saw like that.  Don't really care for it.

Thanks newfie-trucker.

I hate sticks all the way up near the roof and seats all the way on the floor. I know all cool kids are doing it.After further review from the first time we took the truck out I figured that big ugly visor had to go.My brother was the one that built it so we used it. Now the Peterbuilt bowtie we shrunk and put on looks way better. When I get some money those big pipes will come of also and I will try to get some shiny 5" straights for it also. I want to see if I get that more old skool look. Still haven't figured what to do about the bumper yet. It's a work in progress.Keeps my brothers and I busy.

Let's see what kind of trouble I can stir up today. When I was a kid in high school I spent many an afternoon at the local KW dealer (Truck Enterprises in Richmond, VA) sitting in new K100s and collecting just about every piece of literature they would give me. Don't ask what happened to it all! Anyway, I used to sit in Geometry class and dream about going on a date in my very own KW one day. Something like this would have worked just fine...

Here's another shot of the 86" Aerodyne from the KW publication "Class 8". I always liked either the 86" or 108" Aerodynes but the 108"s seem much more common today. This is a great shot though.

newfie-trucker , A gullwing won't go with the look we are going with on the bumper. These trucks didn't come with gullwing bumpers at all.As for the pipes 5" is what we want. I have a friend that had a 1957 Peterbilt with a 220 Cummins with 4" straights and it was the loudest thing I've heard. Thanks anyways.

Bruce, Thanks for your opinion . Our truck has a 9sp main and a 4 speed brownie.

Fred, Thanks for your compliment on the interior I pretty much think the 5" straights chromed would make the truck look more old skool.

John, Thanks the engine is all taken care of. It worked out for the best. We pulled the radiator out and flushed it got a new water pump all new belts, head and alot of aluminum parts polished.Yeah the square thinner bumper is definitely something we are considering. Here are some pictures of our engine not hijack the thread.

They said they get up to three containers shipped a year and are looking for a regular place out here in the west coast to load. They also said they would help on the first one to show us how they want it done.My Dad also loads a container of used Japanese car parts every two to three months way harder because there is not a inch spared. We had friend that was shipping containers to Australia and we know the great deal he use to go through to get everything spotless.

My Dad's never been down under, traveled a great lot here in the US and all of Central America.Maybe my Grampa.LOL

By kblackav8or - Monday, January 23, 2012 8:53 AM
I looked at adding CAC to my A model when I had it.  My understanding from talking to other folks here is that you can use a T-600 radiator and then a CAC from some other model or have one made.  Second option is to have the upper tank modified and run the plumbing over the top for the CAC.  It has been done a number of ways.  I have seen pictures but not recently.  Radiator Supply Warehouse may be able to help.  I think they have done the top tank mod before for folks.  Since you are going from a aftercooler based system to air to air, your radiator isn't working as hard to deal with aftercooler heat so the gallon or so of water you might lose from the top tanks is inconsequential.

Swishy, Grenfell,

Great looking bunch of KW's with the steering wheels on the wrong side!!!  Seriously though, nice to see that KW is well represented downunder!!!

I'm from KW country, Washington State, growing up in the 60's and 70's around here there were other trucks driven but only cuz they hadn't worked their way up to KW yet.  May be some exceptions but not many locally anyway.  KW was the GOLD STANDARD!!

They don't get much better than that red 924, great story, and I like the old Cat stuff too!

Thanks for taking time to post the pics, I enjoyed them.

Jim,
Now that I see this photo it's unclear whether it's a K100 or a 500 series.

Thanks,
David

Look like what is on International KB's too.  They have a part that wears out then they get floppy.  I have been told there is someone reproducing them for Internationals but that you have to cut down the actuating shaft for them to work with the KW latch system.  I have not personally verified this..just passing on what a guy who restored a 1950 KW told me.  My suspicion is they may have come from a GM supplier.

What a shame to see that bullnose like that, I'm starting to like the looks of these early cabovers.

It would havee easy to find Larry without the arrow. Just photo shop a beard on him and it would look just like a little Larry.

Grenfell,

Interesting.....you would think they would use the same grill as the standard w-900. Do you know if the hoods are the same height ? It's hard to find any info on an American W9-S-2. I haven't noticed one around in a long time.

I have an old KW add mentioning the S2. About all it gives is the BBC (102 ) and power options. Early engines were C-190 Cummins and DD 6v53. I think they may of offered bigger engines later on.

John,

Great looking truck and dog.

I think it takes tallent to fix up a truck that looks "balanced". Not to much or to little but balanced. This truck is a perfect example of my point.

Larry------I put a few miles on that W-9 KW from East Mfg. hauling new trailers and dump bodies to Kentucky and picking up miscellaneous fabricated parts in Pittsburg and Youngstown .Early 3406 and 13 speed and nice paint .When Roger Weinert would take a few weeks off to drive the band supplies for the Caviliers Drum and Bugle Corps out of Chicago,he had me fill in for him . Ran out of fuel on I 75 just before exit at Corbin,Kentucky. Coasted in scale area ,called the truckstop where I was gonna fuel up anyway, lucky it picked up fuel pretty easy .
East also had a T600 with a 10 spd. OD . Roger told me to keep it in 9th in Ohio, but got nailed anyway on a downgrade on I 71 by Galion . Worked for them 2-3 years when Roger was on leave .
