Rick, I'm so sorry to hear the prognosis. First things first, I hope your surgery and subsequent recovery goes well so you can get off the pain pills. It sounds like you will have some time to come up with a plan for your future. (Hope for the best and plan for the worst) You were hurt on the job, so someone (I would think workmans comp) is responsible for a vocational rehab if it becomes necessary. Make them take care of you even if you have to force them to in a court of law.

money can't buy happiness, but it does pay the bills!

Good Luck My Friend

Hang in there. We all have a specific end date for our selected work, we may not know when it is exactly but there is a plan for you in something follow on. Maybe it is teaching the new firefighters or something completely different. Maybe it is time to head back to school for a year or two and exploit your talents and experience into something you both enjoy and can prosper from. I am very fortunate my flying days weren't over 3 years ago in 2006, more then likely had I been promoted I would almost certainly been done flying so the blessing in disguise for not getting promoted is a fabulous twilight tour here in WA but it too will end. By August of 2012 I will almost certainly be done flying for the Navy and on to whatever comes next. Rick I suspect you will land on both feet no pun intended. My prayer for you is that however it mends you are fully mobile and suffer a minimum of pain and after effects. You may want to look at what the real risk vs return might be if you were to make it back into the station as a regular firefighter. Nobody likes not leaving something on their own terms, men especially but eventually it is bound to happen to everyone regarding something in their life. Best of luck on the next stages. Please don't buy one of those hoverround things. If you need that kind of mobility, come up with something more creative/annoying..maybe burns gas or diesel

Well here it is in a nut shell. After another MRI and Xrays and a second surgeon looking at things with him, the decision has been made. They have schedule surgery for July 29 at 7:00 AM. He will fuse L 3, L 4 and L 5. There will be screws and rods inserted for support. He is not able to repair it like last time because of the damage done to the last repair.

The surgery will take around 3 1/2 - 4 hours. It means 3 - 4 days in the hospital with a recovery time of  6 months minimum.

The bomb shell came when he said I might start preparing for life after being a Firefighter. It's not an absolute but likely.

This SUCKS!
