started to tear into the parts truck for some rear diffs.  I need to remove the front diff. I have the axles out and drive shafts out but, how is the best way to remove the front hogs head? The shaft that goes through to the rear looks like it should be remove first. I have never been into the rockwell diffs before and could use some help, I would hate to break stuff I need later.

The thru shaft will come out with the carrier. Cant get it out any other way.Take the yoke off first.

You should be able to pull the diff without removing the thru shaft first  ....I always used a couple of 5/8" x 10" long bolt's with the heads cut off  to help guide the housing out from the casing. i have pulled a few  with out using the 5/8 guides  and just let it hang off the thru shaft  but that was out in the bush with limited tool's etc.

Or am I thinking  of the SSHD's ???

I will reword my post and i need to look closer to what model you have. Leave thru shaft in the housing and pull carrier out leaving the thru shaft in with the rear drive connected. Sorry i need to read the post closer or something.

hi,

We got it all apart last night. unbolted the intermediate drive shaft, removed the yoke, removed hogshead bolts and it all came out together, the shaft just kinda fell out once apart. Thanks for your help guys!

I had that thought yesterday when I read this - but its been a while so I didn't answer, but I thought on the Rockwells -SL/SQ etc the thru shaft didn't come with the carrier. Probably wasn't necessary, but I always crawled in there, took the rear drive shaft down, took out the 4  3/8 bolts and pulled the shaft with the little bearing box with it first. If doing any thing with the carrier I always figured that bearing and seal needed to be replaced too and might as well take it out first and not have to guide along it either going in or out
