Ever since I saw the first show on the Dalton Highway (I think it was that Tough Jobs show where they take average people and train them to do tough jobs and see how they do), I kinda wanted to go drive it. I figured after a few years of winter driving here in the western states, I'd like to go try the Dalton... chaining thirty-four times in a trip is a BIG turn-off though.:P

ta begin with ...

.....i dont know a any tyre chains that are warrented fer 516 miles [each way].....lol....

......

......it;s not that we havent ran tyre chains fer extended periods...

....it;s cause [as ruppster mentioned] ...the chains limiit our speed ....the tyre chains wouldnt last that long ta make near that long ta make the trip anyway...and will take the sidewalls a the tyres ............out sides bein a very bad ride ..ta boot....lol

.....

...we was jest talkin bought tha ;;ole days;; a the haul road jest last night in the garage with some fellow truckin buddsa mine ....

.....

...he beat....my record .......on one particuler trip i chained [and unchained] ....29 times on one trip ......

....

...he chained and unchained 34 times .....

....

...on that thousand plus mile  round trip  lap outta fairbanks.alaska..ta prudhoe bay ....

.....

...with me bein  outta anchorage ....its nuther almost 800 round trip  miles from fairbanks for i even  start goin north from fairbanks........

.....

[didnt do no chainin from anchorage ta fairbanks though]

.....

...gotta remember.......although there are few roads.....

.....alaska is  one third of the sizea the entire   lowere 48 combined.....and ittsa ...long ways,,, between places

.....

......

....

....chainin part is  notta record i;d care ta repeat though........lol

They limit your top speed. With chains you have to keep the speed down to around 25 to 30 mph. So they are only used for the worst areas where you have to go slow to begin with.

Dumb question about the tire chains in the show: I've never had to fool with them so I don't know much about them but why do they keep taking them on and off? They showed one trip where they (Lisa, I think) put the chains on, got over the rough spot, took them off, then put them back on again in the next rough patch. Since they are on snow and ice from the time they leave pavement, why do they not just leave them on once they have to chain up? Or is that something they've just edited into the show...maybe they pieced two or three trips into one?

Tomer,, I actually considered movin the brake pedal over to the L side of the column, where it should be... how else ya gonna maintain or slow down, and downshift at the same time? When ya aint got a jake, on cabbage, and need to slow for the slow 4wheelers, ya gotsta improvise. That other pedal on the L outta be swapped w da brake. Ya dont need no gas when yur stoppin, just a brake and then da clutch(starter/stopper) thing.

Jim, now some wiseguy is gonna come on here n say, what if ya do that and miss a shift..well, real truck drivers dont miss them shifts.. yur only allowed to miss shifts on the flat where it dont matter..

And, while we're mentionin Lisa... anyone remmeber Lisa from Lisa truck Lines? kinda reminds me of her when younger..babester..

thats many times how we do it......

....

...right foot ....mashin yer moter...

.....

...left foot slightly on our brake treadle valve[foot brake]  while goin down the road, ta periodicly thaw out our brakes...ta melt the snow outta our wheel ends ...

...

..esp so .....if your not runnin backin plates[dust covers]...

...

when yer packin 20lbs[or so] a snow in each brake spider .....

.....it aint gonna stop very well ferra long ways anyway.....

......and snow and ice packed brakes may not hold ya while spun out onna hill either.....

.....[hate it when i go off backwards.....lol]....

....

......so ya wanna keep the snow and ice melted out when  ya anticipate needin the brakes....

...

unfortunatly .....,she was advised ta do that after the fact of needin brakes at an un opprotune time...

...

...fer those of you watchin............dont belive ever thing that hollywood has cut and pasted ....matter a fact......if they would jest show and tell the way it really is ......it would be more dramatic than there ;;;hollywood;; version.....

.....

......but ever thing is pretty much real [its jest how they format it] and add there drama fer vewiers......

......they [the film crew] arrived in november and stayed most all winter.....and they picked onnea the best years ta film cause there wassa very bad winter .....and lottssa carnage on the haul road ......although a very bad year fer those runnin it....

.....

...and they didnt havta wait long ta seea serious wreck...

...i can remember some years past when there wassa bad winter when there was lottsa freight ta go north ....so they [the truck pimps] hired outta work dirt dobers......with absoulitly no haul road exp ta haul pipe north.......comment was made .....ya haddta havea reservation ta getta place in the ditch...lol

.....

...they was cleanin up wrecks /and pickin up drill pipe all the next  summer long......from that winter;s disrupted haul...lol

......

...the continuance of the hugh/ alex thing is most all ;;;hollywood;; though

Did any one else notice that in the animated brake aplacation when Lisa lost her brakes , thay used the left foot to apply the brakes.      :D;)

If you needed to keep some power to the throttle, how else would you do it?

John Costley (6/28/2009)
Mike,

The problem we have ( Had, you cant give one away up here so no one is ordering them anymore ) is that they tend to wind up and torque bind if youre hauling heavy or working one on a hard grade. They are supposed to shift like a 13, there is a thumb button that splits each hole, no hi/lo side, just split all 5 stick positions.Problem is, when youre running six axles at 100K ( or even 80K on steep hills ), you wind it up on a grade against that weight, move the button for an upshift, lift youre foot off the throttle to let it shift,... and nothing.Youve got to kick the clutch to get it to make the upshift on a button split, by then youve lost momentum and it aint a smooth shift.Looks good on paper, but if youve got to use the clutch then its worthless.John

John when i had a freightliner on the road for a while i pulled a rockwell 10 speed out and put a supper 10 in that i aready had because i like them because i think they are easy to shift on the main box but i learn years ago when i worked on them if you leave the clutch along and on ever spilt slide it out of gear on the main box and let the splitter shift while in neutral it is so smooth. The splitting with button while in gear was a selling point from eaton but it will losen the back box in a short time. They do have a hi/low sychro but it is activated by the stick and is done when you move the stick to the third rail. The top 2 was designed to make you cause you ant got no choise but to ride the rpm done in ten to 1400 before it will shift into 10 gear. That is all programed in the engine ecm to when to up shift or down shift. The fleets think they can control the fuel burn by pulling the rpm down lower. The top 2 can be turned off with a reburn station. Same trans as a normal supper ten but with one line and selnold add to it and the ecm on the engine flashed for it.

.....while enroute .....ya jest come on it [and if the rare time of daylight durin winter] and notice that the road jest dissappears and thers nuther part over there a long ways away..

.....

....ya call on the radio while approchin it [as northbound trucks have right away]........southbound trucks hopefully stop before desending, cause ya dont wanna meet any body on it

.....

....ya creep off from the top atta bought 9mph ....and start pickin up gears as ya go down .........usually end atta bought 70 mph[or however fast yer truck can go] ...at the bottom......and hope ever body heard the radio .....and they [state maintance] hassit graded good at the bottom.....grit yer teeth ....and hang on fer the ride

.....

...when i used ta run it [the dalton] all the time........i used ta make comment .....that if i wanted ta take a passenger up the haul road .......jest drop em off fromma helicopter on toppa roller coaster .....and ill wait in the truck ta start the journey....and they can ride from there....lol

...

....

..if they rode [which many have] from the beginnin of the trip ...they would already have gotta ;;feel;; a whats bought ta come .....cause they woulda already hadda taste a the ;;taps;; fore ya got there....

......although impressive ......lisa is know by most haul road guys assa ;;steerin wheel holder;;;.....but i think she does a pretty good job though...[ive had gals drive fer me also ....but ...flatbed freight is somewhat difficult fer em]...

....

matter a fact.....lisa was jest over at onnea my ;;allstars;; wifes places a bizz yesterday lookin atta 4 wheeler......

...

.......

...back in the ;;good ole days;; id hook up with somea my ;;;buds;; and race back ta fairbanks after unloadein in prudhoe bay [even after bein up 20 hrs or so] and see whos gotta buy the whiskey back in town ........last one hasta pay the bar tab......back then the bars were open till 6 am and reopened at 8am in fairbanks ..

[[[[jest nuff time ta clean the floors i guess]]].......lol

.......even though i was racin back ta town witha buncha k model 600 cummins and 3408 cats .......the ole v12 detroit usually got me back ta town soon nuff that i rarely hadta pay the bar tab though......lol.....[never try it today though]

.....

..i used ta give somea the gals that waitrest at coldfoot truckstop rides back and forth from fairbanks......
