I noticed when they were showing the tanker that slid in to the guard rail (the one that lost traction due to "no chains") that the truck had chains on it. What got me though was that the guy running with Hugh let him go without chaining up. Thought this guy was supposed to be the safety rep for Carlile. Then when they had to sit along the road for a while due to the tanker accident he still didn't chain up.

| noticed on tonights episode ......that cary hall was featured.... ....[which i already knew he would ...along with some outhers i know before the last 5 episodes are aired] ....... .....jest talked with lisa last thursday morn [bought 1 am] down on the kenai pennsula over the CB radio while we was lined up inna const zone down there while we was convoyin are own double pilot car /double oversize crusher plant load outta seward ak ..... ....little bit overweight/over heighth/ over width/ and really ugly LOL.......matter afact all 4 loads a em was kinna ugly now that i think bought it....[usually know when 988 cat loaders wont budge em...and they bring out the big cranes ta load ya ...amazin how stupid and how fergetfull i am.... lol] ... ........[she was goin the outher way].... ...... ......ive known cary fer years .....and used ta work on his dads trucks..........cary [and his dad] used ta haul some stuff fer my company years ago...[usually the heavy stuff]... .... ...never ferget... .....dispatched cary ta go up the road a little and go pick uppa fairly large excavator fromma customer a mine....and go take it north...... ... ...he shortly came back ta the shop without the excavator on the lowboy..... ..... ..i asked ......wheres your load????....... ..... .....in his jokin fashion ......he explained that they wouldnt load him cause id sent a $^^%e@ ta do a mans job ...... ... ....he was upset [but still had humour]... ..... ....i however found no humour in it at all..... ....... ....i dialed up the long time customer .....and told him what i thought bought the issue...... ..... ..... ....told this customer ta lose my phone number......cause ya cant pay me nuff ta ever haul anything fer ya again ..... .... ...that was 20 [or so] years ago .....and i aint hauled nuttin fer em since.....and still dont plan too either

I'll chime in and say that the best drive tire I've found has been Toyo. I don't run snow or ice, but in the winter I do get into a lot of mud and "snot". I got 16p.r. Toyo's with a 30/32tread and they're great. Best place I've found to get them is the local Les Schwab.

I usually try to run studded or siped steer tires in the woods. I ran some Ohtsu front end tires one year with the center siped and the outside edges studded.... didn't seem to do that much better, so I tend to stick with sipes. Driver tires don't hold up well with sipes, if they aren't treated right, and chains are a bit tough on them, but the best I've had was some Toyo's that were siped. I can't remember the number, but they were a great open pattern, and the sipes were good and deep, so they really worked well. They held up pretty well in spite of running iron for about half the miles driven every day. and very seldom finding a flat spot on the road. Alot of the trucks up here run "gripper" caps that are siped on the drivers and they work well. I ran a set of studded drivers one winter and they really didn't seem to help. Nothing compares for traction to the chains we run, and by the time we hang iron, we need it....we're way past where we can get by with studs. Having those "corked" chains on is a really good feeling when you're hanging off the side of a mountain on the ice with it raining, 34 degrees and you're looking down a grade a few miles long that even the woods crew 4x4 pickups are running chains on....especially if you're on the downhill side! We even use a close linked tire chain to protect tires in sharp rocks. My record for throwing chains is 9 times in one day. As far as siped I have a set of Goodyear 14.00x 24s that are siped. I can't find the photos on my computer but I have seen loader and skidder tires that were studded.

Are the chains for traction on ice or mainly for digging through the deeper snow?Marc, Never heard of anyone trying studs on big truck tires.We still stud car and pu tires up here, work good unless you get a dry spell,then you wear the studs down pretty quick.Have to be a little more carefull about locking the brakes on plain wet asphalt too.Good on ice though.Probably wouldnt last long on a big truck unless it spent all of its time off road. As far as siped, Michelins fairly new XDN2 and XDN2 GRIP ( directional tread ) are the neetest thing since sliced bread,lol.We tried a few sets in the X-one size last winter, pretty awesome on hard pack and ice.Lots and lots of sipes with a good open block outer edge and fairly aggressive overall tread.Plans are to gradually switch the rest of our fleet over to them.They just came out with them in an 11R24.5 size for the guys that are still running tall rubber.A little pricy, but actually worth it.'Course, up on that road even the best tires aint going to get you up those grades without chains when its hardpacked or icy, but the XDN2s would bite alot better on the "normal" sections.John

Makes sense! See, told ya it was a dumb question! Guess that's why the Good Lord knew to put me in Kentucky instead of Alaska!That last episode also showed a wreck involving a green W900L. The door said "Sourdough Express". Seems like there was an article in WOT a while back that mentioned that name. Anthony

Chains keep your tires from spinning on ice. Mostly for getting up hills. When I'm in my two-wheel squeal pick'em-up on ice, I need them on LEVEL ground to go anywhere since I don't have much wieght on the drives.

Jim does this count? I hung 12.00/24 3 railers made out of 3/8" chain on the drives of a rig up truck 8 times in 100 miles once and the tempreture was in the 90s and got dozered twice the worst thing about mud chaining is you are usually in deep uh! trouble by the time you have to hang iron. I would still take mud over snow though any day.
