| I pick-up a regulator and brushes for the "dead" re-built that has been in my side-box since I had the new one put on... As it died all of a sudden, I'm fairly sure it was the reg... but didn't check it while it was still on the truck... I even have some diode blocks in my tool box at home... I hate throwing away re-biuldable componants... Wouldn't bother rebiulding for others (where I had to warente it myself)... but "rebiult" the dead one before I got into the sleeper this eve...That way If the other diodes quit before I make it back home, I can swap-out the alternators..

| Geoff I know what you mean. We get about 6mo. to a year out of them, granted we run alot of off road in the log trucks. Like the Delco brushless, they used alot of them in the Cat equipment I used to work on. We dont even have a rebuilder around anymore, could'nt compete with the cheap new throw aways.

Alts ok here, but batterys give nothing but fits, I put 4 new 6's in the water truck in Oct and one just hacked last week, the other set only lasted about 2 years.
I can't get anymore out of it, I've got both sticks hot clear up to the knobs allready.

Geoff, it's not like the old days when you went down and bought a set of brushes and bushings and rebuilt it for next to nothing. We rebuilt everything. You hit the nail on the head when you said throw away. You would think with the greenies squealing about over filling land fills that we would be going back to rebuilding instead of throwing away.

| Anyone else have problems with the junk they put out for chargeing systems now-a-days???? I'm on my 3rd in under 2 years... don't know how long the 1st one was in... replaced with a re-biuld (last a month or so... regulator quit while I was on the road... had to buy a new altenator at rip-off price (T-A)) I woke up the the low volt alarm going off... was able to drive to the truckstop (was a Sunday and didn't know how far I could make it).... Just over a year later one diode dropped... still chargeing but at 1/3 rated... My 67 year old generators are still working... Why can't they make a decent Alternator??? I have an old brushless Delco but I think it needs a diode as well (its sitting on the shelf at home)... I am almost to the point of trying to get an old 60 generator fitted to this truck!!! The only thing I haven't yet tried is eliminateing the "internal regulator" and controlling it with a external reg for a generator @ 60 amps (max) to try and keep the diodes from failing... 1/2 the time its diodes, the other 1/2 its the regulators... Now, I know I work them a little... I have a fridge and computer, aux fans on the A/C condensor, and an electric fan clutch...But still, I can't see where it is any worse then the newer electronic controlled engines.... they have a heck of a "running load".... In a week or so, I'll be switching over to air-start... that will help a bit.. 60 amps should just about handle everything with a little to spare... Just getting fed up with the junk they are makeing today... I don't think Delco is even still makeing their brushless alternators anymore... I think Denso is makeing a brushless, but am not sure how they last.... Everything is throw-a-way @$290 or more.... Ok... enough rant.
