most of us have drove one,one that just pulled and ran better than others.this is a story about one such truck i drove in 2000.1 million 300thousand was what it had on it when i got it,just out of darr caterpillar in waco tx with a fresh inframe.it was a 1987 379 short hood,425 B model cat 15over trans.370 rears.the fellow i was going to work for had 3 older 379s,a 87-a 88-and a 95.we had a contract to supply several ready mix cement plants and several asphalt plants with materal.we ran over weight permits for 84000,which we loaded as heavy as we could.(paid by the ton)sometimes a little over.lol.all 3 of our petes were spec. about the same, only differene being the 95 was a 435E,but they didnt pull the same the black 87 short hood hands down would leave them all behind.we also ran out of the same pits with several other companys, some with big horses, but soon the old black pete was the talk on the radio.im not a speed demon at all,but i love nothing more than to pull out in that left lane and pass them going up a hill, and sometimes catch another gear as you go by,that always gets them going.one co. we ran with had late model f-liners with 500 dd 60 series, they were hauling railroad ballast to fort hood for a new rail yard.i would get to the pit early every morning trying to be the first one loaded,i would turn the old cb down where i could still hear the loader and other trucks in the pit, then i would crawl back in the sleeper to wait for my time to load.for about 6 mounths it was the samething every morning, truck 647 #3 ballast to fort hood, truck 758 #3 ballast to fort hood,i use to lay there and count how many were loading ahead of me,with a smile on my face thinking how many i would pass on the first couple of hills.cant really explain why the old truck pulled like it did,im sure some engineer would tell you same spec. their all the same, but we know their not.i like to think that some are just special, are maybe they just have heart!

You too are a speed demon, well at least a demon anyway.
