Federal went through several complicated mergers and ownership changes in the '50's. The only "truck people" of these owners was NAPCO in 1955. Napco is best known for 4 wheel drive conversions, most notably Chevrolet and GMC trucks in the '50's until GM began building them at the factory, initially with NAPCO components, in 1959. More mergers followed NAPCO, and by 1959, still losing money, Federal was done. Approximately 160,000 Federal vehicles were built between 1910 and 1959.

Bill D, Stan Holtzman states in "Big Rigs" that Martin Pulcher of Detroit started Bailey Motor Truck Company in February, 1910 and later on that year changed the name to Federal Motor Truck Company. States that the company was started with $50,000. Hmmm, less than 1/2 the price of a typical truck today. Said the company ceased operations in 1959 after building an estimated 160,000 trucks. Park Olson, our Federal expert, might have some more details.

So what happened to Federal? Were they absorbed by some other company? Didn't they make a lot of trucks for the government?

Everyone who agreed with Brian gets a star and everyone else ? Oh well ....

This is a big all wheel drive Federal from around 1956 (1956 is written on the fender) and between Park and Jay we should have the rest of the story. We featured a similar Federal from a brochure in the WAI some time ago. Thanks to Michelle for the photo.

I'm going out on a limb!! How about US Navy SeaBee issue Dodge cab on a AM General chassis???? Possible the plow frame was an addition after some highway department bought it surplus.
