years ago ,i was leased ta an outfit that transported the freight up and down the trans alaska
pipeline. as well as occasional supplys from the lowere 48 north.......they had outher freight also...but that was the biggest part of it........
.......
...it was all owner ops .........i was number 6 of 27 on the seniorty board......
.....that was.... it was all owner op trucks [company trailers ] .......BUT 1......
....and that happened ta be onea them r model mack things witha v8 and 5 spd.....
...it was all ;;pedigree;; mack from front ta rear...[unfortunalty]
......
.....the boss said[claimed] they only had it fer ;;local;; delivers only........
...
....so it kinna ended up that .... if the guys down the senoirty board hadda awshit[PO>D the boss] or broke down and toke ther truck outta service fer any amount a time ......they ended up in the ;;penilty box;;; an ended up havin ta drive that thing ,,,,,,,,sometimes allot further than jest ;;local delivers......
....
...i had always considered that if one hadta drive onnea them things round the block ....thats far nuff feera ;;;local;; delivery........figgired any futher than that would be considered a ;;long haul;;; in that thing
.......
...
..never was asked ta drive it myself [not that i would anyway].......but heard lots bought it....[nuttin good]...did havta work on it alott in my shop though............lol
.....
...i always made sure that when i toke my own truck outta service ......i was far nuff outta town that they would never even ask me ta drive that thing.........[id make sure i was in fairbanks NOT anywhere near the anchorage yard]...........lol

You can still see where the old V-8 Emblem was at. A Mack V-8 got the emblem. A Detroit V-8 didn't get one.

I am sure you know but thought it was a 245 but anyway it was a big horse in its time. But it needed a 15 speed trans to get anywere . The next one was the ENDT 864 with twin turbos. I rememnber the first one sold here in Tulsa.May have been in 67.Cant remenber if the pump had been changed but the one like in the photo had a PSJ or PSM and was known to go as many as 60,000 miles with out replacing the fuel pump.Talking about weak liner packing i think you can say cummins was same way because rubber was not so good when the coolant was not proteced like it is now with filters. Back then alot of people drained the antifreeze untill winter not knowing how to take care of coolant. That engine there would make a real noise with twin riker muflers on some tall 4" stacks.Almost crack glass. In this engines day you did not want to set the fuel up or it would burn pistons fast.

That looks like the 325 Maxidyne V8 that was in the '73 F700 that Dad had to drive for a year. Couple that engine with the 5 speed trans and you've got the definition of frustration.

Lots of power, but weak o-rings on the sleeves. I see it has the "butt buster" seat as well.
