Ruppster,

I was able to find some more information this evening on the GMC numbering system.  There was a change in 1972 as I stated earlier, but there was another change in 1979.

If the serial number that you listed was built in 1980 the VIN for a similarly equipped truck would be T49KHV.  So from the information that I have the serial that you listed would most likely be a 1972 model, and the conventional would be a 1975 model.

I was not able to find any better definition of the Brake/Body designator, but I believe that you are trying to determine the year of manufacture.

Sorry for the false assumption earlier, I should know better by now.

Ruppster,

Astro VIN TDH92AV

T= GMC, D=Aluminum Tilt Cab - Tandem Axle (Astro 9500), H=Detroit Diesel 8V-71, 9=GVW (9,000 series), 2=Brake/Body configuration, A=year of production, V=Built in Pontiac, MI

7500 Conventional VIN TJV73DV

T=GMC, J=92" BBC Conventional Cab - Tandem Axle, V=Detroit Diesel 6V-53, 7=GVW (7,000 series), 3=Brake/Body configuration, D=year of production, V=Built in Pontiac, MI

The T/C prefix (GMC/Chevrolet) began with the 1972 production year so both trucks are 1972 or newer.  I haven't found confirmation of the Letter=Year designation, but until we can find better documentation it would be safe to assume that the astro is a 1980 model and the conventional is a 1973 model.  I also haven't been able to verify the updated Body/Brake designations, but most likely the Astro having a "2" would indicate a Tractor/Air Brake arrangement and the 7500 a Cab Chassis/Air Brake set up due to it's "3" designation.

I am still trying to confirm this information in the library so if anyone can add to this, please do.

I hope this will help,

Bill

I have a GMC Astro/General service manual with the breakdown of the vin but your numbers do not seem to coincide. Shows here it should have more digits (17?) and might start with 1GT.....

My Manual was printed in 1984. I am guessing that guy may be right about the 70's

Nowadays the 10th digit is the model year

a=1980 , b=1981, c=1982...... until  2001 where they just used the last digit of the year

Any More info about the truck?

John

This is the VIN for the Astro 95. Was told it was a 1983 model but someone else on here thinks it might be a 70's version.

TDH92AV603XXX

Here's the VIN for the GMC 7500 Conventional. Seller said it was a 1979 model.

TJV73DV580XXX

Thanks,
