My Dad's name was Roy Shumpert, he leased on with Dean in 1959 and eventually worked himself up to Vice President.

Junkman and others

Earlier in the post we discussed tandem axle D860s, or the lack thereof. Rummaging through a couple of 1958 GMC TSP folders (truck sales promotion????) I found references to factory tandems. Specifically in TSP 58-8 tandem axles are listed as a Major Option; and in TSP 58-23 they are listed under Balanced Power Trains.

The option appears to have gone away in the 1959 brochure posted earlier. Standard nomenclature would have designated the trucks DW860s. There may be a photo or brochure out there.

Dan - I wrote a response last Th/Fri then accidentally deleted it before hitting send.

I have never come across any information on conventional tandem 860s. The cabover 860 was offered with tandem drive and air suspension - DFRW 860.

Part of my accidentally deleted message was the air suspension was offered on 10 models when initially introduced in early 57.

GMC AIR SUSPENSION FA 500
GMC AIR SUSPENSION FA 550
GMC AIR SUSPENSION A 600
GMC AIR SUSPENSION FA 600
GMC AIR SUSPENSION R 800
GMC AIR SUSPENSION DR 800
GMC AIR SUSPENSION FR 800
GMC AIR SUSPENSION DFR 800
GMC AIR SUSPENSION DFRW 860
GMC AIR SUSPENSION DFR 860

There was fat cab 900s,910s,920s, that were 2 axle units, 950s, 970s and 980s that were tandems, all with 117" BBC and later 110" BBC but that was '49-about '58 era, . The 860 with 90" BBC from about '57-early '60s overlapped the long conventional and was built with more aluminum to be a lightweight contender .

Clayton--------Any evidence that 860s were built as tandems ? The only full screw tandem I've seen was the 800 , 4-71T powered 1957 vintage truck that's with Earl Fitzgerald. It's weird as it has air suspension front axle, Hendrickson lighter weight maybe 28000 rated rear that has the double driveshafts to the individual rear ends .

I can't help you with the Trailaire trailer question; however want to help verify the GMC tractor model.

In 1960 GMC re-designated their models from 3 digits (100 to 900 series in 40's and 50's) to 4 digits (1000 - 9000 series). It is my understanding GMC carried the GMC Model 860 (short nose diesel conventional) forward to 1963 as noted in Don Meyer's "The First Century of GMC Truck History - From 1902 to 2002 - With Prologue to 2015".Any chance you are referencing the GMC D860?

Hello, my FIRST POST!, I'm looking for information on any Trailaire Moving Trailers (Company went out of Business Years ago) and ANY help on locating a 1960-1963 GMC 960 Tractor. My Father was leased to Dean Van Lines located in Long Beach, CA. Also ANY Info on 1960-61 Trailmobile 38 Ft. Moving Vans that had the Tandems ALL the way to the back. I have Pictures, and Dad passed away in 2004. Thanks, ANY help appreciated.
