That trans has no snychronizers so the problem is the way your shifting it. You need to drive it more.

Wasn't this the transmission that although it had all those ratios available ,Spicer advised to skip some combinations and drive it only using 7 or 8 ratios . Will try to dig out more info .

Where's Rick? He put lots of miles on one of these. If these boxes are derived from their manual shift '70s cousins, Glenn is prob'ly right. The twin stick setups seem to require more precise shifting than a Roadranger.

The '70s and '80s Spicers are notoriously expensive to fix. Many were yanked and replaced with a Roadranger for less than the price of the parts to fix the Spicer. But a cool trans to have in a truck.

Here's all you will ever want to know about the 1420.

http://http://www.tremec.com/oem/support/pdf/2345_20.pdf

On page five of the 71, it says the racheting sound is to be expected. Does not say anything about ripping and grinding!!

That looks to me like a great box to drive; top 8 gears w/ one lever move.

I love the youtube videos of the Aussie with the 3408 Cat from GM16v149

Well----must have done something wrong, can't get the links to work, looks like I have too many hppts to start with.

Would being more careful copying the address fix that?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJC47912E_4 Pardon the trail and error, I edited this one. Try it.

Ok I don't know how well I'm gonna do trying to explain this but here goes.

In a 14 speed the air shift 1to2 and 3to4is the same gear set shifting the shift from 2to3 is that gear set down shifting but also another set of gears shifting up so you move the air valve from 2to3 pause for an up shift then bring the rpm up to complete the shift. The instuction book calls that 2to3 shift a range change. Areally nice trans when you get the feel of it.

Don't worry someone better at putting stuff in words will show up soon.

Im sure other have/will make you the same offer... If you ever want to get rid of it, I'll offer you your choice of transmissions 13, 15 or? for it! I think that is one of the best.
