Here is a general list of all the diesel engines Ford had used in their medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks. You might wonder why I chose the starting date as 1963: that was the year Ford offered diesels for their medium-duty trucks as well (their very first diesels were sold in 1961, which were all in the H-series COE's: models HD-850, HD-950, HD-1000, HDT-850 and HDT-950). The ending year is 1988 for it marks the 25th year that Ford had (seriously) sold diesel trucks. Years of engines are listed given inception, however, only 1963-88 models are covered.

So, without further ado (corrections/suggestions are welcome):

Dan,

Oh no... buses aren't my only subject these diesels are used in. Yes, some of these engines did find their way into buses (the various Detroit Diesel mills, and the Cummins V903 and L10, amongst others).

I had an 1150 [Ford V-200] at the shop at school, it was already there when I hired on in 76. I always thought the slogan on the valve cover was cute. Quote "Built to rigid Ford specifications by Caterpillar"

Not sure if you consider them "medium duty", but Ford offered a bunch of diesel options in the P series chassis. IIRC, they included 4 cylinder versions of the Dorset and Dagenham English Ford diesels and the 3-53 and 4-53 Detroit Diesels. I've seen the 4 cylinder B series Cummins in early 80s E350 stripped chassis, but they were reputedly aftermarket conversions.
Yes, there were British Ford diesels used in the P-chassis:
*The Dagenham 220 (3.6L) 4-cyl was offered from 1963-1966.
*The Dorset 242 (4.0L) 4-cyl was offered from 1967-1969, and for 1970, it was enlarged to 256 cubic inches (4.2L). The 256 cubic inch version was used from 1970-1971.

When Ford discontinued the Dorset 256 4-cyl, they replaced it with the 3-53 Detroit Diesel for the years 1972-1973 through whenever the P-series was cancelled.

Oh, I also wanted to add that Ford also cataloged the Dorset 363 diesel as a DSO (District Special Order) option for the P-5000 from 1969-70.

Ben----Are you sure the 6V53 was only offered in the Louisville line up through '72 ? My guess it would have been at least to the early '80s . The F & T models of the 60s had dual oilbath air cleaners and hood scoops + ram air ,like tuned headers .

According to James K. Wagner's history of Ford trucks, he says in 1973 the Cummins V555 replaced the 6V53N.

Prior to its use in the Louisville, Ford also cataloged the 6V53N in the F/T8000 (replaced by the L/LT8000 after 1970), the N/NT8000 (LN/LNT8000 after 1970) and the C/CT8000 series as far back as 1967. Can't be sure if the V555 was cataloged for the 1973-78 C/CT8000.

A few Canadian fire trucks built on the C/CT9000 chassis used the 6-71N or 6V92TA Detroit Diesel engines.
